Nature and landscape

Montaione is the paradise for nature and adventure  lovers, this is why it is well known in Tuscany as the "town of green tourism".

Here, rows of cypresses alternating with vineyards and olive groves and vast wooded areas that meet clay hills, design an area where for centuries there has been a perfect harmony between man and nature.

Near Iano grows spontaneously the "Taxus Baccata", commonly called Libo, which together with the "Pungitopo" is used as a Christmas decoration according to the Tuscan tradition.

In Castelfalfi there is a "natural beechwood" located between 200 and 300 meters of altitude, a  unique fact for our territory as this plant grows  in the mountains above 1000 mt.

Very common in Tuscany is the olive tree, plant from whom it is produced the unmistakable and very valuable extra virgin olive oil . In Montaione - at the intersection between Viale Da Filicaja and the road to San Vivaldo - you can admire a unique specimen: a splendid "Bohemian Olive".

At Poggio all’Aglione, on the road from Montaione to San Gimignano, there is a secular "Leccio" (quercus ilex) of about 750 years old, with a circumference of 4.60 mt and a height of 13.50 mt , which is considered a monumental plant.

Another feature of the landscape of the Tuscan countryside, unmistakably photographed and painted, are the gently clay hills with trees that spring out of nature.
This typical and characteristic landscape that changes color according to the seasons - the hills turn green in spring and then go golden with wheat in the summer - can be admired on the road that from Montaione leads to Santo Stefano and near the locality of Sughera.

Unique landscapes and unmatched natural views can be admired from the Sanctuary of Pietrina, where beyond the mushrooms, bushes and wild flowers, a breathtaking view stretches over the woods and clay hills to Volterra.

Only a few places in the world offer a rich and varied landscape like the one of Montaione, with unique and suggestive places that you will only be able to truly explore and appreciate on foot or by bicycle.
