Monastery and holy Mount of San Vivaldo

Montaione SIghtseeing

The Holy Mount of San Vivaldo is the most important monument of Montaione. it is situated in the middle of an extensive forest called "Boscotondo" or "Selva di Boscolazzeroni".

Here at the beginning of the 14th century, the Franciscan Vivaldo Stricchi of San Gimignano retired as hermit; he was found dead in a hollow trunk of the chestnut tree he used as a shelter and a primitive oratory was set up on the site.

In 1497 it was entrusted to the Lesse Friars of Saint Francis and became one of their convent.

The peculiarity of the Convent of San Vivaldo also called the Jerusalem of Tuscany, is a series of chapels scattered in the wood around the church, containing terracotta pictures and paintings from the school of della Robbia (16th century) in which episodes of Jesus Christ life are represented.

They were built between 1500 and 1515 by Frà Tommaso of Florence, who wanted to create a mystical itinerary following the topography of Jerusalem and Palestine making the places connected with the preaching and passion of Jesus Christ.

The little temples originally were 30, now only 18 are left. In the old hay-loft there is a permanent exhibition showing the characteristics of the holy mount.

The convent is populated only by two friars, there is a restaurant and the chapels always open are visited by many people coming from all over the world all the year long. The Holy Mount has been recognized as National monument. In summer time classic music concerts are organized outdoor.
