Situated inside the huge wood called 'Selva di Camporena', the castle of Vignale is remembered for the first time in a document of Federico Barbarossa dated back to the year 1161.
Later, in 1186, Arrigo VI gave a part of the castle of Vignale, together with Barbialla and Castelfalfi to the Bishop of Volterra, Ildebrando Pannocchieschi, and another part to the Count Della Gherardesca.
After many wars, it was submitted first to San Miniato, than to Pisa and in the end to Florence, after that it went abandoned. Today is still possible to admire the ruins with the old church, while in the nearby there is still the old mill.
