The castle of Barbialla has been a property of the counts Cadolingi and Gherardesca just before the year 1109.
In the year 1186 it has been given to the bishops of Volterra, than to San Miniato and in the end submitted to Florence in 1370.
In 1383 the Castle was populated by 334 inhabitants, and in the village there were an 'ospedaletto', a house for wayfarers and pilgrim.
Bought from Pisa and rescued from Florentines, sacked more than one time and place of many battles as confirmed by the last and recent excavations. Recently, on the last ruins of the Castle, in the 20th century, it has been built a Villa, while the church in the nearby is dated back to 1912.
