The old hamlet of Tonda dates back to 1212, when the German emperor Ottone IV assigned the manor to two Pisan's brothers.

Bought in 1267 from the municipality of San Miniato and submitted to Florence in 1370, the Castle of Tonda was completely walled with inside a church, a tower a cistern and the municipality Palace. For his hilltop position the castle must certainly have had a notable defensive importance.

More recently, the area of Tonda submitted to Montaione and today is a hamlet that include Piaggia, il Castellare, Orzale e Collellungo.

The ancient village, bought from a Swiss company has been restored into accommodation as well as the farmhouses in the surroundings, while in the Castellare there is a restaurant.
