The village of Tonda can be reached by driving along the road to San Vivaldo, and turn right about one kilometer before San Vivaldo, or by following the road to San Miniato turning left over the bridge on the river Egola, acrossing the locality of Alberi, climbing the hills and turning right at the first junction.
Tonda and his castle probably dates back to 1212 when the German emperor Ottone IV gave the feud with the castle, the neighbourhood and all its inhabitants to two noble brothers Pisan.
Acquired in 1267 from the town of San Miniato and subjected to Medici Lords of Tuscany and Florence in 1370, the walled castle of Tonda presented inside a church with a tower, a cistern for collecting rainwater and the building of the municipality.
Tonda was assigned to the town of Montaione in 1379, with an "ospedaletto" and podestà.
In Tonda in 1551 there were 290 inhabitants while in 1839 were 353. In more recent times, the area of Tonda was subjected to Montaione of which is still a locality together with the villages of Piaggia, Castellare, Orzale and Collelungo.
Remained uninhabited since the Second World War, the village was renovated and turned into a residence while in Castellare there is a restaurant.
