A few kilometers from Montaione, on the way to San Miniato, there is the locality Le Mura, whose name probably dated back to 1405, due to an ancient castle or fortress at the time.
Although some findings suggest that the area was inhabited since the time of the Etruscans, the first reports date back to 1356 and relate to the church of Sorripole or Surripole. The old church was destroyed by a landslide and was rebuilt using the material left near the rectory in the early nineteenth century. Today the Church is called Santo Stefano in Sorripole.
The first homes were situated on a hill to the left of the hamlet, while the fortification - of which remain only a few remains of a tower -, was located farther down.
On the edge of the road is a tabernacle representing Santa Verdiana, patron of Castelfiorentino. This is to remember that just below the hamlet of Mura near the brook Aia, a young Tuscan girl less than 15 years old, called Verdiana, boys at a family of a farmer, while grazed sheep made the first miracle.
There are no precise information on the birthplace of Santa Verdiana, however, it is mentioned for the first time in the territory of Montaione.
Today, Mura is a locality close to Montaione where there is a restaurant, a fuel station and a horse riding school.
The ancient houses have been restored and some of them used for farmholidays or vacation home for those who want to spend an holiday in Tuscany.
