The history of Iano dates back to the 1004 when Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi refused the church of S. Andrea in Alliano to the bishop of Volterra.
Today, in the small village, there is still the old road and the houses in bricks and travertine, a stone in which the land is rich.
Iano include the hamlets of Torri, Forni, Casicello and Palagio and after the agricultural crisis has been famous for the quarrying and working of onyx.
Today the 'Palazzaccio' that in the past was a nunnery, has been transformed into a residence for tourists as well as the farmhouses in the nearby. In the village there is a restaurant/pizzeria and a small supermarket.
